Replacing Customer Edge Routers with Managed Ethernet Converters

Managed Ethernet Services over PDH and SDH

Typical Users

  • Carriers and service providers

Typical Applications

  • Extending Ethernet service reach

Where fiber is not available, some carriers and service providers use a combination of Ethernet radios and customer edge routers to extend their Ethernet service offering to enterprises. These routers are used to access the SDH transport network. Where a large number of remote locations need to be served, however, the high CapEx associated with costly routers is prohibitive, hindering new revenue opportunities from Ethernet business services.

RAD Data Communications offers an economical alternative that eliminates the need for routers with managed Ethernet over PDH/SDH solutions that combine great savings with carrier-grade performance.

Eliminates the Need for CE Routers

Instead of routers, carriers are deploying the RIC-LC managed Ethernet converters in remote POPs, to backhaul Fast Ethernet user traffic received from the microwave radios and to prepare it for transmission over an SDH backbone using NG-PDH/SDH encapsulation and bonding, thereby allowing carriers to make use of their existing TDM infrastructure. RAD's Egate-100 Gigabit Ethernet over TDM aggregation gateways are deployed in a central location to aggregate Ethernet user traffic received from a large number of remote RIC devices. Together with the RADview-EMS management system, the RIC-LC CPEs and Egate-100 aggregators provide a complete access solution from the service provider central site to the customer premises.

The RIC-LC enables extension of high capacity Ethernet services to remote locations, by bonding up to 16 E1 links, thus providing scalable bandwidth from 2 Mbps to 8 Mbps to each customer.

At the central POP, the Egate-100 aggregates user Ethernet traffic and radio management data for delivery to the packet network and data communication network (DCN), respectively.

Features

Benefits

Managed converter for bridging Ethernet over up to 16 bonded E1 circuits

  • Low-cost, simple alternative to routers
  • Leverage existing PDH and SDH infrastructure to provide managed Ethernet services
  • High speed connectivity with scalable bandwidth up to 8 Mbps per customer

Employs Ethernet over Next Generation PDH/SDH encapsulation and bonding (GFP, VCAT, LCAS)

  • Optimize available bandwidth
  • Dynamic bandwidth allocation without affecting the service

Carrier-grade management system

  • Allow remote configuration and monitoringE
  • Ensure swift fault notifications and resolution

Remote, carrier-class management

Supporting VLAN-aware bridging and VLAN stacking (Q-in-Q), the devices’ Ethernet capabilities also allow prioritized quality of service (QoS) for various voice and data traffic, with traffic management attributes, such as scheduling and rate limitation. In addition, the Egate-100 and RIC-LC are remotely configured and monitored by the RADview EMS carrierclass element management system, which offers a variety of FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Administration, Performance, and Security) and diagnostic tools to simplify operations and ensure timely fault notification.
