IEEE standard 1588v2, or 1588-2008, defines timestamp distribution between a clock master and a slave, whereby the timing information is originated at a Grandmaster clock function that is usually traceable to a Primary Reference Clock (PRC) or Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). It offers high accuracy, with HW-based timestamping support and fractional nanosecond precision. Although it can be implemented end-to-end, support of IEEE1588v2 by intermediate network elements (“boundary clocks” and “transparent clocks”) ensures better performance.

RAD’s ACE-3220 cell-site gateway is designed with standard 1588v2 capabilities, to support mobile operators and transport providers in their migration to all-IP RANs (radio access networks). Featuring a full range of highly accurate, standard synchronization options, the ACE-3220 allows operators to transition their backhaul networks to packet technology by minimizing the risk of inaccuracies, such as packet delay, delay variation and packet loss. 1588-2008 functionality is also incorporated in RAD’s ETX Carrier Ethernet demarcation devices.
