RAD and HP to Conduct Joint vCPE Demo at Mobile World Congress

Will Showcase Two vCPE Implementation Alternatives with VNF Service Chaining
Feb 26, 2015

RAD, the industry pioneer of Distributed NFV (D-NFV) and a member of the HP OpenNFV Partner Program, will join HP for a live demonstration of vCPE implementation for business services at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona.

Combining RAD's award winning, D-NFV-enabled CPEs with HP’s virtual services router (VSR) and standalone server, the demo will show two vCPE implementation alternatives with service chaining of multiple virtualized network functions (VNFs). The first implementation option features RAD’s powerful ETX-2 demarcation device, which combines the advanced Layer 2/Layer 3 demarcation functionality of a state-of-the-art network termination unit (NTU) with a powerful x86 server that acts as a built-in virtualization platform. The second option features an HP server combined with network termination using RAD’s unique finger-sized MiNID miniature network interface device (NID). The ETX-2 and MiNID are part of RAD’s Service Assured Access (SAA) solutions.

The demo presents a vCPE case with connectivity and service demarcation using L2 Ethernet OAM. The HP VSR, managed by the HP VSR Manager (part of the HP NFV Director orchestration solution), will be used to control traffic between simulated customer sites. Moreover, a virtualized Traffic Analyzer function, controlled by the Traffic Analyzer Manager, will enable remote monitoring of connectivity performance using IP TWAMP.

“For service providers, the driver for vCPEs is increased flexibility and fast service rollouts while reducing cost,” explains Ulik Broida, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at RAD. “By combining forces with HP, RAD will be demonstrating that its Service Assured Access solution will accomplish that objective by supporting any vCPE implementation scenario to fit diverse performance, cost and security needs.”

“Communications service providers are turning to virtualization of core networks and network functions to accelerate innovation and launch new services faster and with less expense,” said Werner Schaefer, Vice President, Network Functions Virtualization, HP. “Our work with RAD on virtualized network functions service chaining shows how providers can benefit from a smooth, secure and cost-effective transition to NFV.”

The demo will take place at HP’s Application Partner Pavilion in Hall 2, Stand 2D50. RAD simultaneously will be demonstrating its new D-NFV Orchestrator at the IMA Pavilion in Hall 2, Space D50.
