Canada’s TELUS Selects RAD Equipment to Manage New Business Ethernet Service

November 9, 2007: TELUS (TSX: T, T.A; NYSE: TU), a leading Canadian national telecommunications company, has selected Ethernet equipment from RAD Data Communications to enable its new business Ethernet offering throughout Canada.
TELUS is deploying its new CML3 (Customer Managed Layer 3) Ethernet service to business customers of all sizes and is using RAD ETX-102 and ETX-202 Ethernet demarcation devices as a cost-effective means of managing the service. With some 11 million-customer connections, TELUS is a leading telecommunications service provider in Canada.
RAD's ETX-102 and ETX-202 are intelligent, carrier-owned and operated demarcation units installed at the customer premises to handle traffic going to and from the TELUS Metro Ethernet and MPLS fiber-based networks. The devices give TELUS the ability to deliver carrier Ethernet services tailored to the customer's needs and to manage those services to assure that TELUS is meeting its SLAs (Service Level Agreements) with customers.
"Ethernet has finally matured to the point of being a true carrier grade service, in part due to the end-to-end control provided by products such as RAD's ETX family," said Zouheir Mansourati, TELUS vice-president Technology Strategy. "RAD's ETX-102 and ETX-202 are helping us deliver a service that we have the confidence to back up with an SLA."
"The ETX-102 and ETX-202 enable TELUS to deliver its CML3 service to customers at far less cost than the typical alternative, which is installation of an expensive bridge or router," explained Oded Ilan, President of RAD Data Communications, Inc. "In fact, the RAD equipment gives TELUS the capability it needs to deliver high-performance Ethernet services, including management, traffic engineering, and performance monitoring, at a fraction of the cost of more elaborate equipment."
RAD's ETX-102 is a feature-rich, low-cost demarcation device for delivering Fast Ethernet services at rates up to 100 Mbps, while the ETX-202 provides similar services at rates up to 1 Gbps. MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) 9 and 14 certified, both units support a suite of OAM (Operation, Administration, and Maintenance) capabilities, including Layer 2 loopback and "Dying Gasp," which keeps a connection alive long enough to send an OAM message to the network about a power outage. They also deliver multiple customer VLANs and VLAN stacking, service differentiation with multiple priority queues, rate limiting, and uplink redundancy.
"The ETX-102 and ETX-202 minimize the investment that TELUS, or other service providers in a similar situation, needs to make to bring Ethernet services to their customers," Ilan noted. "The equipment delivers all the capabilities needed to manage the service and helps document that all uptime guarantees are being met."

Both the ETX-102 and ETX-202 are designed as clear demarcation points between the user and operator. They allow a service provider to achieve end-to-end rather than just edge-to-edge service control. Their internal bridges provide flexible VLAN capabilities, and they enable service differentiation at the customer premises by providing per-service rate limitation and traffic prioritization.
