RAD Leverages Existing TDM Infrastructure for Fast Rollout of Carrier Ethernet Services
Unique Gigabit Ethernet-over-SDH/SONET Demarc Devices Support Balanced and Scalable Migration to PSNs
April 29, 2008: RAD Data Communications has unveiled two unique demarcation devices that transform legacy infrastructure into reliable, economical, accountable, and limitless next generation Ethernet-ready networks.
By employing virtual concatenation (VCAT) to bond multiple STM-1/OC-3 links, RAD's new state-of-the-art RICi-155GE and RICi-622GE Gigabit Ethernet demarcation devices leverage existing TDM legacy infrastructure to facilitate a fast rollout of next generation Carrier Ethernet services. IP DSLAM backhauling or high-capacity Ethernet service provisioning over SDH/SONET lines reduces capital expenditures (Capex) while supporting a balanced and scalable migration to packet switched networks (PSNs).
"Incumbent and alternative carriers alike can create new revenue-generating Ethernet service options through an optimized utilization of SDH/SONET circuits," notes Shoval Bolotin, Senior Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications. "The same solution also enables fiber-empowered operators to extend their existing Ethernet services to customers far beyond their fiber reach."
Sophisticated Diagnostic Tools Reduce Opex
The RICi-155GE and RICi-622GE enable service differentiation and guarantee quality of service (QoS) for each user port per Ethernet flow and class of service (CoS) to minimize disruptions, while sophisticated diagnostic tools reduce operating expenses (Opex). The devices also allow carriers to deliver Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) port-based and flow-based services using flexible traffic mapping, prioritization and rate limitation. Rate limiting and flowing enables several different services to be transported over the same link. "Plug and play" functionality provides for simple installment.
Both the RICi-155GE and RICi-622GE are MEF 9 and MEF-14 EPL and EVPL certified.
The RICi-622GE and the RICi-155GE offer migration paths for connecting future-ready IP devices with Ethernet interfaces into existing SDH/SONET networks. They enable operators to offer a flexible combination of fixed and best effort service bandwidth and, in addition, offer Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS), which dynamically increases or decreases the capacity of concatenated containers to provide built-in redundancy.
The RICi-155GE transports Gigabit Ethernet traffic over two STM-1/OC-3 uplinks, offering bundled access rates of up to 300 Mbps. The RICi-622GE provides Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over STM-4/OC-12 uplinks at access rates of up to 622 Mbps, and also bonds up to eight STM-1/OC-3 lines to yield more than a gigabit of bandwidth.
Ethernet OAM
Phase 2, which will be introduced later this quarter, will provide Ethernet Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities and low order VCAT, which provides hard-to-find bandwidth in increments of 2 Mbps within VC-12 or VT 1.5 containers on up.
EtherAccess Product Line
RAD's RICi-155GE and RICI-622GE Gigabit Ethernet demarcation devices are elements of its EtherAccess product line for delivering both Ethernet and emulated services over any infrastructure. EtherAccess is designed to provide carriers and their customers with a cost-effective, standards-based system for delivering a uniform user experience with verifiable Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
